Veronique's experience story

In the series “How are things now” we talk to former patients about the period they entered treatment at Castle Craig. They talk about their experiences and how things are going now. The names are fictitious, but their stories are real. This week the experience story of Veronique.

Veronica 23 (2012)

'I didn't want to go into recovery. Or let me put it another way: I wanted to, but my addiction said loudly: 'No!'. And the more my environment insisted to have me admitted. The more I panicked under duress from my addiction and started using more drugs.

In the end, an intervention had to be involved to get me where they would give me the best care. Bee Castle Craig in Scotland. The first weeks were hell. How I got through it is still a mystery to me to this day. But then, little by little, I started to feel better.'

Veronica 30 (2020)

'I had no idea then, but when I look back on that difficult period, my stay at the clinic was the best thing that happened to me. Today I am alive again. I make my own decisions and I no longer talk about drugs, booze and cigarettes. Because I have renounced everything, including smoking one pack a day. My mother passed away two years ago. Because she loved the sea, she had 1 more wish before she died. She wanted to sit comfortably wrapped up in a chair by the sea. I made that wish come true for her. A week later when she said goodbye, she said she was so proud of me. If there ever comes a day when I get cravings again, those are the words I will remember. '
