“I had put it off for too long. It started when I was in my late 20s. I wasn't into drugs, I wasn't even into mixes or vodka and whiskey. I drank wine when I went out. But I drank as much of that as a serious beer drinker drank his lagers. I told myself I was a sociable drinker, but of course I was addicted. And when I became unemployed at 52, which I did purely for fun, because my husband earned a lot of money as a director, things really started to get out of hand. I was told through the grapevine that Castle Craig was the best addiction clinic. I just had to go there.'

'I learned a lot there, also about myself. But one of the most important lessons was that secrets kept you sick. In my first week back home, I had a very long conversation with my husband, expressing regret for everything I did to him during my active addiction. The lies, the slip-ups with other men, I've thrown everything on the table. With moist eyes he then told me that he already knew everything, but that he was so happy to hear it from me now. We then held each other for a long time and cried together. Today I am 60, 7 years clean & sober and I have a great relationship with my husband. And that feeling is completely mutual.'
