Dimethyltryptamine, also known as DMT, is a psychoactive drug that causes stimuli in the brain to be experienced differently. Smoking, injecting, or giving DMT orally can have physical and mental effects. DMT is harmless and non-toxic, but it does involve some risks.

What is DMT

Each drug contains substances that affect the nervous system, only a changing drug, as the name implies, has a changing effect. DMT is such a changing drug. This means that due to the action of the substance, the user experiences stimuli that enter the brain differently than they normally are.

DMT is a substance that is produced by organisms, including plants and occurs naturally in small quantities in the human body. The substance is produced in the pineal gland. The pineal gland is a small organ right in the center of the brain. It plays an important role in the production of melatonin: the hormone that takes care of our biological clock. Why DMT occurs in the human body is still a mystery.

The drug originates in nature. Natural DMT from plants can be consumed as Ayahuasca. Indigenous peoples of South America have used these resources in shamanic ceremonies for centuries.

In addition to the resources that can be obtained from nature, DMT is generally synthetic. That is, it is produced in a laboratory. In synthetic form, it is a white and pungent-smelling powder. By smoking it in the synthetic form of the drug, you can greatly increase the amount of DMT in your body, resulting in very powerful psychedelic and mind-altering effects. Smoking is the most well-known and common form of DMT use.

The Effects of DMT

When smoking DMT, the trip starts almost immediately after inhalation. The effects depend on a number of factors. These factors are:

  • Personal; experience, expectation etc.
  • Area; is it busy or quiet, a familiar or unsafe environment.
  • The dose; effects and strength depend on the dose being administered.

The use of DMT involves both physical and mental effects. Spiritual effects of this predominate. Mental effects are:

  • You can experience a euphoric feeling.
You can experience sounds differently than they are.
  • You can experience change of perception; things are contoured, deformed, emit light, become more colorful and intense.
  • You can experience change in time and space; spaces can be larger or smaller than they appear and time often seems to pass slowly or stand still.
  • You can gain insights into your own life or life wisdom.

Physical effects that can occur with the use of DMT include:

  • Your heart rate can increase.
  • Your blood pressure can increase.
  • Your body temperature can increase.
  • Your pupils can dilate.
  • Its use can lead to nausea and dizziness.

Risks in use

DMT is not physical addictive. Not much is known about mental addiction at this time. DMT is non-toxic and harmless to the human body: an overdose is practically impossible. However, its use does involve a number of risks.

Physical risks:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • An uncomfortable feeling in the stomach
  • Vomiting

Mental Risks:

  • An anxious, panicky feeling
  • Feeling paranoid
  • Restlessness in the body

Long-term effects are not yet known due to a lack of research. As a result, it is still unknown whether DMT can be addictive.
