Modules in Addiction Counselling
Castle Craig offers an intensive, skills-based course offered in four modules covering essential requirements for accreditation in addiction counselling.
Each module has credit rating of 15 credits at SCQF Level 8 by Napier University.
Course Aims:
- Promote knowledge and understanding of addiction.
- Become familiar with the core functions and competencies of a counsellor working in the addiction field.
Objectives:
- Provide education on relevant theories that guide addiction treatment practices
- Foster critical understanding of the main effective treatment interventions
- Increase skills in the practical application of the addiction counselling approaches.
Teaching methods:
- Didactic lectures, interactive seminar groups, literature review and practical exercises.
- Assessment by essay, case study and/or multiple choice tests
MODULE 1:
Understanding Addiction
- Theories of dependency
- Models of treatment
- Introduction to Pharmacology
- Overview of the main approaches to counselling practice; behavioural, humanist and psychodynamic and their relationship to current evidence based interventions
- Overview of the 12 core functions of an addictions counsellor
- Consolidation and reflection
MODULE 2:
Twelve Core Functions of an Addictions Counsellor
- Overview of screening, intake, assessment and diagnostic tools currently available in the field
- Review of brief interventions and their suitability
- Skills development in conducting a comprehensive assessment using MET
- Skills development in developing a care plan in partnership with the client
- Co-ordination of treatment, case management referral and consultation.
- Crisis management
- Role of supervision
- Consolidation and reflection
MODULE 3:
- Addiction counselling; individual, group and family
Introduction to the theories of counselling - Basic principles of counselling practice
- Values and ethics in the counselling relationship
- Project Match: CBT, MET, 12 step facilitation
- Skills development and the use of Motivational Enhancement Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and 12 Step Facilitation
- Family systems and skills development for working with family member
- Introduction to group work theory and practice
- Consolidation and reflection
MODULE 4:
High risk and special/populations with multiple needs
- Prevalence of co-morbidity.
- Models of treatment for co-morbidity and for substance abusers to include personality disorders, depression, eating disorders, psychosis
- Prevalence and treatment of special populations including: the elderly, adolescents, those with learning disability, gay, lesbian and bisexuals, those with blood borne viruses and those of differing ethnicity
- Practical application of the 12 core functions within this population
- Consolidation and reflection
Cost
£ 550 Per module
£ 2000 for all 4
Diploma in Addiction Counselling:
1 year full time to include the certificate modules £10,000 Begins with the first certificate
module on 29th September.
Accommodation is not included. If required this can be arranged.
Entry requirements
Applicants for whom English is a second language will be expected to have achieved IELT’s examination score of 5.5 or equivalent.
A placement experience is desirable during the year

Glynis is an accredited therapist, an ICRC oral examiner, Certified in Reality Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. She has teaching qualifications and has extensive experience in this field.
